Does Reading Make You Smart?

Does reading make you smart, polished, and dignified? Should reading be a priority? Yes, I outrightly stand in favour of this!

George R.R. Martin said – “A Reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, the man who never reads lives only once.” Deep thought and a true one.

Books are our best friends at all times anywhere in the world. They don’t judge us or question us and they make us forget our troubles.

When we read a book and if we connect to one or another character or some circumstance of the story, it has a lasting effect on us. Books encourage us to analyse several situations with new angles and perspectives. Reading helps us to improve our reasoning and communication skills. They enhance our creativity and flexibility. They transform us into a better person. But you need to consciously work on this practice to avail the benefits.

What kind of a reader are you?

  • Polygamist– Such is a multi- task reader, they read many books at a time but never miss a single plot.
  • Monogamist– A single task reader that reads one book at a time and reads their favourite book several times.
  • Extrovert– Loves to read adventure and  new genres.
  • Introvert- Loyal to a single genre, deeply relates to the plot, and connects with characters.

Reading is important as it stimulates the brain exercises like thinking, reasoning, and remembering. It makes you discover new words which were meaningless to you a while ago. You have to challenge your brain to comprehend  those complicated words, phrases, and lines. This enhances your vocabulary and strengthens your command of the language. Reading is a practice that you have to constantly exercise just like any other skill. The emphasis is to grow from one book to another.

  • Provokes your Perspective and deepens Empathy

Books take us beyond the realities of our lives. Reading makes you a part of someone else’s life real or fanciful. Briefly, you ponder on another person’s reality and wonder “What if?”. It challenges your point of view and makes you experience multiple realities. You may not agree to a certain one, but it surely makes you find out the different perspectives of life’s most common situations. Reading unlocks your new sides. This invokes interest and humility for tackling the complex situations of the world. It transforms your personality for the better.
